An inclusive and supportive primary school in the heart of Southwark (SE5) is looking to appoint a passionate Learning Support Assistant to join their dedicated SEMH provision. The setting offers targeted support to pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs, helping them re-engage with learning in a structured, nurturing environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide consistent 1:1 and small group support for children with SEMH needs, focusing on both academic and emotional development
  • Implement de-escalation strategies and regulation techniques to help pupils manage behaviour and anxiety in the classroom and during less structured parts of the day
  • Deliver elements of personalised learning plans, behaviour support plans, and therapeutic interventions under guidance from SENCOs and external specialists
  • Actively support transitions between activities and lessons, ensuring routines are followed and pupils feel safe and supported throughout the day
  • Encourage the development of positive relationships, communication skills, and resilience through structured interventions and mentoring
  • Liaise closely with teaching staff, therapists, and families to ensure a joined-up approach to pupil support

Candidate Criteria

  • Experience supporting children with SEMH, SEND or behavioural needs in a primary or specialist setting
  • Strong understanding of trauma-informed practice, attachment needs, and behaviour regulation strategies
  • Calm, patient, and proactive in difficult situations, with a genuine passion for helping vulnerable pupils
  • Relevant qualifications (e.g. Level 2/3 TA, Team Teach, MAPA) are desirable but not essential
  • Committed to full-time hours and consistency, which is key for pupil development in SEMH settings
