About the RoleWe are seeking a dedicated and skilled Family Practitioner to join our Children's and Young People's Services team. This is an opportunity to make a real difference by delivering both statutory and non-statutory assessments and family support interventions to children and families across the borough.

You will work within a supportive team, led by experienced social work professionals, to help children remain safely within their families and to promote positive engagement with local community services. The role involves providing practical, evidence-based support to improve parenting capacity, address children's developmental needs, and foster positive family interaction.

Key Responsibilities

  • Undertake assessments through direct work, observation, and information gathering to contribute to holistic understanding of children's needs.

  • Build respectful and trusting relationships with children, families, and their support networks.

  • Work collaboratively with other agencies, incorporating their input into plans and assessments.

  • Deliver home-based interventions to support parenting and child behaviour, using evidence-based approaches.

  • Maintain accurate, detailed case records and prepare clear, concise reports.

  • Attend multi-agency meetings, including Child Protection Conferences and Looked After Children Reviews.

  • Promote access to local resources such as children's centres, youth hubs, and adult support services.

  • Work flexibly, including early mornings, evenings, and occasional weekends, in line with families' needs.

  • Prioritise and manage your own workload, meeting agreed deadlines and standards.

  • Ensure all work is in line with safeguarding procedures, equality commitments, and health & safety requirements.

About You

  • NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in child and family work.

  • Substantial experience in direct work with children and families.

  • Strong understanding of child development, parenting capacity, and environmental influences.

  • Ability to assess risk and protective factors within families and communities.

  • Skilled in applying a range of intervention tools and approaches.

  • Excellent communication and relationship-building skills.

  • Ability to analyse complex information and write clear, concise reports.

  • Computer literate, with experience using case recording and information management systems.

  • Flexible, resilient, and committed to achieving the best outcomes for children.
