Excellent Opportunity - Homelessness Prevention and Assessment Officer

We are currently recruiting on behalf of a local authority in Lewisham for an experienced Homelessness Prevention and Assessment Officer to join their Housing Needs Service. This is a key frontline role, providing critical support and legal assessment to residents facing homelessness or housing instability.

Role Overview:

The successful candidate will provide comprehensive housing advice, prevent homelessness through targeted interventions, and assess statutory duties in line with current legislation. You will work proactively to resolve cases, reduce the need for temporary accommodation, and deliver a high-quality service to vulnerable residents.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide advice on housing rights and obligations under the Housing Act 1996, Homelessness Act 2002, and the Localism Act 2011.

  • Conduct full homelessness assessments and issue legally compliant S184 decision letters.

  • Use prevention tools such as DHP, landlord negotiation, and mediation to resolve housing issues early.

  • Work with vulnerable clients to assess support needs and make appropriate referrals to supported housing or services.

  • Liaise with landlords, lenders, statutory services, and external partners to secure housing solutions.

  • Maintain accurate case records and comply with all performance and reporting requirements.

Candidate Requirements:
  • In-depth knowledge of homelessness legislation and statutory guidance.

  • Proven experience in homelessness prevention, housing advice, and casework.

  • Strong written communication skills, particularly for drafting robust legal decisions.

  • Ability to manage a busy caseload and work effectively within statutory timeframes.

  • Experience working within a local authority housing or homelessness service is highly desirable.
