Specialist SEN Unit Assistant - SEN School

Are you an experienced and compassionate SEN professional looking to make a lasting impact? Do you have the skills to support students with complex needs in a structured, nurturing environment?

A dedicated Special Educational Needs (SEN) school in Southwark is seeking a skilled and reliable Specialist SEN Unit Assistant to join their team. This role is based within a specialist unit that caters for students with a range of additional needs, including Autism (ASC), Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD), and complex medical conditions.

About the Role:

You will be working closely with class teachers and other support staff in a small, focused unit that provides high levels of care and individualised support. Your responsibilities will include:

  • Supporting pupils on a 1:1 and small group basis

  • Assisting with the implementation of individual education and care plans

  • Providing personal care and medical support (where required)

  • Facilitating sensory-based and therapeutic activities

  • Using strategies such as Makaton, PECS, and visual timetables (training can be provided)

  • Promoting emotional wellbeing and social development

Requirements:
  • Previous experience working with children or young people with severe or complex SEN

  • Confidence in supporting personal care and mobility needs

  • Calm, empathetic, and professional approach to behaviour and communication challenges

  • Able to work effectively as part of a team in a high-need environment

  • Training in Team Teach, Manual Handling, or medical support (advantageous but not essential)

  • Enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or willingness to apply for one
