A leading multi-billion pound civils contractor delivering a flagship highways project in the UK is looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Freelance Section Engineer to join their delivery team. This role offers the chance to take ownership of a specific section of a major infrastructure scheme, involving substantial earthworks, complex structures, and significant utility diversions.

About the Project:

You will be integral to the delivery of a major highways upgrade, encompassing large-scale earthworks operations, intricate structural elements, and the coordination of complex utility diversion works. This is a demanding yet rewarding project where your technical expertise will be highly valued.

About the Role:

As a Freelance Section Engineer, you will be responsible for:

  • Managing and supervising a section of the works, ensuring delivery to programme and quality standards.
  • Overseeing setting out, quality control, and the implementation of inspection and test plans.
  • Managing and mentoring site engineers and junior staff within your section.
  • Liaising effectively with the project management team, subcontractors, and statutory undertakers.
  • Driving the resolution of technical issues and ensuring smooth progress of works.
  • Monitoring progress against the programme and reporting to the Project Manager.
  • Ensuring all works are carried out in accordance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.

What We're Looking For:

  • Significant experience as a Section Engineer on civil engineering projects, ideally within the highways sector.
  • In-depth knowledge of earthworks, structures, and utility diversion processes and procedures.
  • Strong technical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and organizational skills.
  • Proven ability to manage and motivate teams.
  • Relevant CSCS card.
  • A degree or equivalent qualification in Civil Engineering or a related discipline is essential.
