Paralegal Criminal Law Caseworker

Main Purpose

Provide professional and effective support to fee earners by attending allocated matters, preparing case files, and assisting with client and case management. Ensure all work is handled in a timely, accurate, and confidential manner, delivering high-quality service to clients at all times.

Key Responsibilities

  • Attend police stations to take client instructions, liaise with clients and police officers, and provide professional support.
  • Complete all documentation relating to police station attendances promptly and accurately.
  • Maintain regular contact with the daily duty clerk during office hours, providing updates on attendances and estimated durations; notify the duty clerk upon completion.
  • Keep up-to-date with all relevant legal knowledge, practice systems, policies, and procedures.
  • Prepare Magistrates’ and Crown Court cases in line with departmental procedures, ensuring all required steps are completed on time.
  • Attend court to assist advocates, liaising with clients, court staff, and ensuring cases are ready to be called when advocates are available.
  • Provide clients with professional, clear, and reliable advice, ensuring all discussions, actions, and advice are fully documented.
  • Record all key dates, time entries, financial details, and correspondence on case files; complete statutory, legal, and practice forms accurately.
  • Participate in the firm’s out-of-hours call-out rota, attending police stations outside normal office hours (5pm–9am) as first call or backup.
  • Attend internal and external meetings as required for case progression and professional duties.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality at all times in handling client and case information.
