Senior/Principal Electrical Engineer - Building Services / Operational Assets (Net Zero, Data & Decarbonisation)

Location: Manchester
Salary: Competitive (DOE)
Job Type: Permanent, Full-Time
Work Pattern: Option to work a 9-day fortnight

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Principal Electrical Engineer to join a forward-thinking, data-driven Building Services consultancy in Manchester. This is a fantastic opportunity for an electrically biased engineer with strong design experience and a genuine interest in energy, building performance, and decarbonisation.

You will join the Operational Assets team, working on a wide range of commercial, residential, education, healthcare, retail, and industrial projects. The practice places a strong emphasis on using real metered data, BMS data and performance information from existing buildings to design low-energy, high-performance systems that genuinely support clients on their journey towards net zero.

The role has evolved to become design-led first, with surveys used specifically to support accurate design rather than forming the bulk of project work. You will work closely with clients, using building data to size systems correctly, optimise energy performance, and deliver intelligent retrofit and refurbishment strategies.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with a team of 10.
  • Lead and deliver electrical design projects across the Operational Assets and Building Services sectors.
  • Produce electrical design, performance specifications, drawings, and calculations across all RIBA stages.
  • Use existing building data, metered information and BMS insights to inform design decisions, improve accuracy, and optimise system sizing.
  • Support clients with refurbishment, retrofit, decarbonisation, and energy efficiency schemes, including net zero pathways.
  • Provide consultancy services such as:
    • Technical due diligence surveys
    • Condition reports & dilapidations
    • PPM schedules & asset registers
    • EPC assessments and energy optimisation
    • Troubleshooting and issue investigations
  • Oversee contract administration, site inspections, commissioning, and post-occupancy review.
  • Prepare high-quality technical reports, feasibility studies and improvement strategies.
  • Engage in client management and help win new work through relationship building.
  • Mentor junior engineers and support succession planning within the team.

Requirements

  • Chartered Electrical Engineer (CEng) or actively working towards chartership.
  • Strong background in electrical building services design, including refurb, retrofit, and existing buildings.
  • Understanding of performance-led design, energy modelling and sustainable engineering principles.
  • Strong grasp of data, metering, BMS systems and how data informs accurate system design.
  • Knowledge of UK Building Regulations, British Standards, and relevant design guides.
  • Excellent communication, organisation, and report-writing skills.
  • Experience in client-facing roles, work winning and project delivery.
  • A proactive, technically strong engineer who can operate independently and lead projects.

What's on Offer

  • Permanent position within a respected, worldwide MEP consultancy.
  • Chance to drive net zero, energy reduction and decarbonisation initiatives across a diverse portfolio.
  • A continually growing Operational Assets team with clear pathways for progression.
  • A genuinely supportive culture that values accurate design, data insight, and sustainable engineering.
  • Opportunity to work a 9-day fortnight, supporting work-life balance.
