Principal Mechanical Design Engineer Summary

We are seeking a Principal Mechanical Design Engineer to lead and manage the mechanical design scope within civil infrastructure projects, with a particular focus on the water sector. The role involves delivering innovative, efficient, and compliant mechanical engineering solutions aligned with client and industry standards. You will oversee the full design lifecycle, from concept through to detailed design, ensuring integration with civil and other engineering disciplines. This position requires strong leadership to direct design teams, manage technical deliverables, and maintain quality assurance throughout project stages. Collaboration with multidisciplinary teams, including civils and mechanical specialists, is essential to deliver sustainable, buildable, and cost-effective solutions within the AMP 8 framework or similar infrastructure programmes.

Skills
  • Proven experience in mechanical design engineering within civil infrastructure projects
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems relevant to water and wastewater sectors
  • Experience managing multidisciplinary design teams and coordinating with civil engineering disciplines
  • Understanding of design delivery, procurement, and quality assurance processes
  • Familiarity with CDM (2015) regulations and health & safety compliance
  • Ability to develop low carbon, buildable, and cost-effective design solutions
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Proficient in design risk management and design control procedures
  • Knowledge of United Utilities AMP 8 framework requirements
  • Strong leadership and project management capabilities
