Key Responsibilities of an HLTA
As an HLTA, you will:
- Deliver whole-class learning activities under the direction of a qualified teacher
- Support pupils with diverse needs, fostering independence and engagement
- Assist in lesson planning, curriculum delivery, and pupil assessment
- Manage classroom behaviour and implement individual behaviour plans
- Collaborate with external agencies and support school trips and enrichment activities
- Provide specialist support in areas such as speech therapy, literacy, or SEN
- Mentor other support staff and contribute to staff development
What We're Looking For in an HLTA
- HLTA qualification or equivalent (e.g. NVQ Level 3)
- Minimum of 2 years' experience in a teaching or learning support role
- Strong literacy and numeracy skills
- Ability to work independently and manage whole-class responsibilities
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of the national curriculum and relevant learning strategies
- Commitment to safeguarding and child protection
Ideal HLTA Candidates Will Also Demonstrate:
- Confidence in managing challenging behaviour
- Experience with IEPs and individual learning plans
- Familiarity with ICT tools to support learning
- A flexible, proactive, and team-oriented approach
- A passion for inclusive education and pupil wellbeing
