About the Role

A respected and forward-thinking College in Marlborough is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer to lead the technical support and infrastructure function across the campus. This is a hands-on role providing 3rd line support, managing core systems, and ensuring a robust and secure IT infrastructure for staff and students.

You’ll play a key part in shaping the college’s technology roadmap, working closely with the Head of IT and supporting junior members of the team where necessary.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the escalation point for 3rd line support issues across servers, networking, and end-user environments.
  • Proactively monitor, maintain, and optimise the college’s on-prem and cloud-based infrastructure.
  • Administer Windows Server, Active Directory, Group Policy, and Microsoft 365 platforms.
  • Maintain and troubleshoot the network environment, including switches, firewalls, and wireless systems.
  • Ensure systems are secure, patched, and compliant with data protection regulations (GDPR).
  • Lead and implement infrastructure projects (e.g. server upgrades, network refreshes, cloud migrations).
  • Support virtualisation platforms (Hyper-V or VMware).
  • Liaise with third-party vendors and service providers when required.
  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to junior IT staff.

Key Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Proven experience in a 3rd line support or senior infrastructure role.
  • Strong knowledge of Windows Server 2016/2019/2022, Active Directory, DNS/DHCP.
  • Experience with Microsoft 365, Exchange Online, Azure AD, and Intune.
  • Solid networking experience – VLANs, firewalls (e.g. Sophos, Cisco), switches, and Wi-Fi management.
  • Familiarity with virtualisation technologies – preferably Hyper-V or VMware.
  • Backup and recovery systems (e.g. Veeam, Altaro).
  • Excellent troubleshooting and documentation skills.

Desirable:

  • Experience working within an educational environment.
  • Knowledge of ITIL principles or formal certification.
  • Exposure to scripting (PowerShell) for automation.
  • Experience managing Google Workspace (bonus).
