Job Title: Senior Ecologist
Location: Teesside
Salary: £36,000 - £40,000
Hours: Full time – Monday – Friday 9:00-17:00 (midweek and weekend overtime available)
About the role
We’re looking for an experienced and dedicated Senior Ecologist to join our growing environmental team.
As a Senior Ecologist, you will play a key role in resolving project challenges, ensuring compliance with wildlife legislation, and maintaining operational excellence. You will assist and lead a team of ecologists, providing mentorship and hands-on support, and will work closely with other departments to coordinate activities and ensure a swift response to ecological emergencies.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and oversee ecological team
- Assist head of Ecology.
- Write reports and review Ecologist reports
- Plan, oversee, project planning
- Provide expertise on team meetings
- Conduct regular site inspections.
- Train, mentor and supervise ecologist’s adherence to safety protocols and operational best practices.
- Collaborate with project managers and other departments to efficiently schedule and coordinate drainage works.
- Respond promptly to emergency situations, minimising disruption to clients.
- Possess knowledge of a wide range of ecological skills.

Qualifications and Skills:
- Membership of CIEEM.
- Level 2 Class Licence for bat surveys.
- Licences for other protected species surveys.
- Experience in EPS Mitigation Licensing.
- Proficiency in GIS mapping.
- Understanding of relevant protected species planning policies, including the NPPF and local plans, in relation to development.
Requirements:
- Minimum of 5 years’ experience in a similar role.
- Appropriate degree in Ecology or Earth Sciences.
- Proven experience as a senior ecologist, with extensive knowledge of ecology and best practices.
- Excellent leadership and team management skills, with the ability to motivate and develop others.
- Valid UK driving licence and the ability to operate commercial vehicles.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively under pressure during emergencies.
- Comprehensive health and safety awareness, with knowledge of industry standards in utilities operations.
- Effective verbal and written communication skills for collaboration with team members and clients.
- Current training and certifications are highly desirable, including: First Aid, CSCS, PTS, Class Licences.
