Senior Mechanical Design EngineerA leading innovator in the design and manufacture of specialised commercial vehicles, renowned for delivering high-quality, custom-built solutions across the UK and EU markets, is seeking an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to lead our in-house engineering team. Based near the Lake District with convenient access to major transport links, this role offers the unique opportunity to manage the full design lifecycle of cutting-edge vehicles — from concept sketches to seeing your creations on the road. Responsibilities:
  • End-to-End Design Ownership: Lead the vehicle design process from initial concept through 3D modelling, prototyping, and fabrication support.
  • Technical Expertise: Use CAD software (Creo, SolidWorks, or similar) to produce precise manufacturing-ready drawings and models.
  • Compliance & Quality: Ensure designs meet UK/EU Type Approval regulations and align with production capabilities, cost targets, and serviceability requirements.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with production teams to optimise designs for manufacturability and incorporate shopfloor feedback.
  • Innovation: Spearhead product development initiatives to enhance functionality, durability, and market competitiveness.
  • Hands-On Problem Solving: Address design challenges promptly, balancing creativity with practicality in a fast-paced environment.
Requirements:
  • Proven experience in mechanical design engineering within the commercial vehicle sector (trailers, bodywork, or related fields).
  • Strong technical knowledge of hydraulic/pneumatic systems and mechanical components (e.g., pulleys, chassis design).
  • Proficiency in CAD software (Creo, SolidWorks, or similar); training available for specific packages.
  • Familiarity with UK/EU Type Approval standards for commercial vehicles.
  • Demonstrated leadership skills with experience managing design teams and workflows.
  • Practical understanding of manufacturing processes and design-for-production principles.
