Speech and Language Teaching Assistant
Location: Merton, Southwest London
Contract: Full-time, fixed-term (January 2026 - July 2026, with potential extension)
Start date: January 2026
A large, inclusive secondary school in Merton is seeking a dedicated Speech and Language Teaching Assistant to join their supportive SEND department from January 2026. This is an excellent opportunity for an enthusiastic individual who is keen to make a real difference to students with Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN).
Responsibilities
- Provide targeted 1:1 and small group support for students with identified speech and language difficulties
- Work closely with the SENCO and external Speech & Language Therapists to deliver planned interventions
- Support classroom teachers in adapting learning materials and strategies to meet individual needs
- Encourage participation, confidence and progress in both academic and social development
- Maintain accurate records of progress and contribute to review meetings
- Promote an inclusive environment and ensure all pupils have access to the curriculum
Requirements
- Experience supporting students with Speech, Language and Communication Needs or other SEND
- Strong communication skills and the ability to build positive relationships with young people
- Empathetic, patient and committed to helping students achieve their potential
- Previous experience in a school or educational setting preferred
- Graduate or experienced SEN Teaching Assistants welcome to apply
