Reed Education are supporting a fantastic school in Newcastle who are seeking a compassionate, resilient, and proactive SEMH Teaching Assistant to support a group of pupils with social, emotional, and mental health needs in a nurturing primary school environment. The successful candidate will work closely with class teachers, the SENCO, and external professionals to provide tailored support that promotes emotional well-being, positive behaviour, and academic progress.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide group support to pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Implement individual behaviour and learning plans under the guidance of the SENCO and class teacher.
  • Foster a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment that encourages emotional regulation and resilience.
  • Use de-escalation strategies and positive behaviour management techniques effectively.
  • Support pupils in developing social skills, self-esteem, and coping strategies.
  • Monitor and record pupil progress, behaviour, and emotional well-being.
  • Liaise with parents/carers and external agencies as required.
  • Assist in the preparation of learning materials and classroom resources.
  • Promote inclusion and ensure equal opportunities for all pupils.
Person Specification:

Essential:

  • Experience working with children with SEMH needs or in a similar role.
  • Strong understanding of child development and emotional well-being.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and respond to challenging behaviour with empathy and consistency.
  • A team player with a flexible and positive attitude.

Desirable:

  • Relevant qualifications (e.g., CACHE Level 2/3, NVQ, or equivalent).
  • Training in Team Teach, MAPA, or other behaviour management strategies.
  • Knowledge of safeguarding and child protection procedures.
