GSL Education are welcoming applications for the position of SEMH Teaching Assistant (Primary) in Newcastle. This is a rewarding opportunity to support pupils with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs in a nurturing and structured primary school environment.

Role Overview:

As an SEMH Primary TA, you will play a vital role in helping children overcome barriers to learning, both academic and emotional. Working closely with class teachers and the SENCO, you will deliver tailored support and implement behaviour management strategies that foster growth and confidence in young learners.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs.
  • Help implement individual education and behaviour plans.
  • Foster a positive, supportive and safe learning environment.
  • Monitor emotional well-being and promote resilience.
  • Support teachers with classroom activities and pupil engagement.
  • Liaise with external professionals and parents/carers when required.

Job Requirements:

  • A relevant qualification in education, psychology, counselling, or child development (e.g., CACHE Level 3, NVQ, degree in a related field).
  • Previous experience supporting children with SEMH needs in a school, alternative provision, or youth work setting.
  • Strong understanding of the primary curriculum and how to adapt learning for children with SEMH challenges.
  • Ability to implement behaviour management strategies and de-escalation techniques.
  • A strong understanding of attachment theory, trauma-informed practices and behaviour management strategies.
  • Resilience, patience and a nurturing approach to supporting young learners.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with staff and parents.
  • Have an updated CV (covering the last ten years barring any unexplained gaps) and an enhanced DBS registered to the Update Service (or be willing to apply for one).
