Quantity Surveyor - Major Infrastructure Project (Leading Contractor)

Location: South West UK (Site-based with potential for hybrid working as project needs dictate)

Reporting To: Senior Quantity Surveyor / Commercial Manager

*IR35 assessment is possible to dictate Inside/Outside IR35

The Role:

As a Quantity Surveyor on this major infrastructure project, you will be a key member of the commercial team, responsible for managing and controlling project costs from inception to final account. You will work closely with the project management team, subcontractors, and stakeholders to ensure commercial targets are met and risks are effectively managed. This is an excellent opportunity to gain valuable experience on a large-scale infrastructure project with a leading contractor.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Cost Management:
    • Prepare and manage project budgets and cost plans.
    • Monitor and report on project costs against budget, providing accurate and timely forecasts.
    • Identify and evaluate potential cost overruns and implement corrective actions.
    • Value completed work and process payments to subcontractors.
    • Manage and track variations, compensation events, and claims.
    • Prepare and negotiate final accounts.
  • Subcontractor Management:
    • Assist in the procurement process, including tender evaluation and negotiation.
    • Administer subcontract agreements and ensure compliance.
    • Monitor subcontractor performance and manage payments.
    • Resolve contractual issues and disputes with subcontractors.
  • Commercial Administration:
    • Prepare and present commercial reports to the project team and senior management.
    • Maintain accurate and up-to-date commercial records.
    • Ensure compliance with the company's commercial procedures and governance.
    • Assist with risk management and opportunity identification.
  • Stakeholder Management:
    • Build and maintain effective working relationships with the project team, client representatives, and subcontractors.
    • Communicate commercial matters clearly and effectively to all stakeholders.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Degree in Quantity Surveying or a related commercial discipline.
  • Ideally, working towards or holding a relevant professional qualification (e.g., RICS).
  • Proven experience as a Quantity Surveyor, preferably within the civil engineering or infrastructure sector.
  • Experience working on large-scale projects is advantageous.
  • Strong understanding of construction contracts (e.g., NEC, JCT).
  • Excellent numeracy, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in relevant software packages (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite, cost management software).
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • A valid UK driving license and willingness to travel to site as required.
