Job Purpose

To support the preparation, cooking, and serving of nutritious meals to pupils and staff, ensuring a high standard of hygiene, safety, and customer service within the school kitchen and dining areas.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with the preparation and cooking of food under the direction of the Catering Manager or Cook.

  • Serve meals and refreshments to pupils and staff efficiently and courteously.

  • Maintain high standards of food hygiene and safety in accordance with statutory regulations and school policies.

  • Clean kitchen equipment, utensils, work surfaces, and dining areas before, during, and after service.

  • Set up and clear down dining areas, including tables, chairs, and cutlery.

  • Help manage stock levels by unpacking deliveries, rotating stock, and reporting shortages or damaged items.

  • Follow portion control guidelines to reduce food waste.

  • Adhere to allergen management procedures and special dietary requirements.

  • Assist with recording food temperatures and other required checks.

  • Support special school events requiring catering, such as parent evenings or school functions.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Ability to work as part of a team.

  • Good communication and customer service skills.

  • Awareness of food hygiene and safety practices (training can be provided).

  • Flexibility to adapt to changing needs during service.

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in catering, hospitality, or working in a school environment.

  • Basic Food Hygiene Certificate or equivalent.
