We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Planning Officer to join our team.

Contract & Pay:

  • Hours: 37 per week
  • Pay: £25.00 per hour (umbrella)
  • Duration: 3 months+
  • Location: Primarily remote, with induction and occasional office/site visits

About the Role:

You will have a proven track record in managing major planning applications, including industrial developments and large-scale residential schemes (up to 200 dwellings). You will be confident picking up applications mid-process and progressing them to determination with minimal supervision.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage and determine major planning applications
  • Undertake site visits and prepare professional reports
  • Negotiate and monitor Section 106 agreements
  • Represent the Council at committees, hearings, and inquiries
  • Provide expert planning advice to colleagues, Elected Members, and the public
  • Work effectively in a largely remote setting using IT systems (Idox Uniform experience desirable)

Essential Skills & Experience:

  • In-depth knowledge of planning policy, legislation, and local government processes
  • Strong organisational, analytical, and negotiation skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including presentation ability
  • Experience working with Elected Members and presenting at planning committees
  • Ability to work independently and manage own caseload effectively
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and planning-related software
  • Full driving licence and access to transport for site visits

Additional Information:

  • Monthly evening attendance at planning committee meetings is required
  • Basic induction will be provided before remote working commences
  • Must be eligible to work in the UK and able to provide 2 years’ references
