Brownlee Cale are recruiting for a Design Manager in the Rail Sector. The role will focus on schemes within Wales and the West.

Job Outline:

  • Support the planning and preparation of pre-construction activities under the guidance of the Pre-Construction Manager.

  • Work with customers, stakeholders, design partners, and delivery teams to make sure projects are developed on time and within budget.

  • Encourage teamwork and a strong focus on safety, while delivering high-quality solutions that meet customer needs.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Manage design development: Lead the design process, ensuring technical solutions meet operational and safety standards.

  • Coordinate stakeholders: Work with Network Rail, contractors, consultants, and local authorities to align on requirements.

  • Programme & budget management: Ensure designs are developed on schedule and within allocated budgets.

  • Risk management: Identify design, safety, and constructability risks early and propose solutions.

  • Compliance: Make sure designs comply with Network Rail standards, legislation (e.g. CDM 2015), and contract requirements.

  • Handover to delivery: Provide clear, complete design packages for construction teams to take forward.

Key Experience:

  • Experience across the full project lifecycle, from design through to on-site delivery
  • Knowledge of industry processes and contract management (e.g. NEC3)
  • Degree or vocational qualification in Construction or Civil Engineering (essential)
  • Engineering background in areas such as civils, buildings, M&E, geotechnical, or rail-related fields
  • Previous experience in a rail environment

Desirable Qualifications:

  • SMSTS
  • CDM 2015
  • Chartered membership (APM/ICE)
  • PTS
  • Temporary Works Coordinator
