The Role:

As an English Teacher, you will deliver engaging and thought-provoking lessons across Key Stages 3 and 4 (and potentially KS5), covering both English Language and English Literature. You will help students develop analytical skills, articulate ideas with confidence, and appreciate a diverse range of texts and genres.

Key Responsibilities

  • Plan and deliver high-quality lessons that meet the needs of all learners.
  • Teach a broad and balanced curriculum in English Language and Literature.
  • Foster a love of reading, writing, and discussion with students.
  • Prepare students for GCSE and (if applicable) A-Level examinations.
  • Assess, track, and report on student progress in line with school policies.
  • Create a positive and inclusive classroom environment.
  • Contribute to the development of curriculum resources and schemes of work.
  • Support extracurricular activities such as book clubs, writing competitions, or drama productions.

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • A recognised teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, QTS, or equivalent).
  • A degree in English, English Literature, English Language, or a related field.
  • Experience teaching English at secondary level (KS3 and KS4 essential; KS5 desirable).
  • Strong knowledge of the national curriculum and exam board specifications (e.g., AQA, Edexcel, OCR).
  • Excellent communication, literacy, and classroom management skills.
  • A commitment to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children.

Desirable Attributes

  • Experience teaching A-Level English Literature or Language.
  • Familiarity with a wide range of literary texts, including contemporary and diverse voices.
  • Ability to integrate digital tools and media into English teaching.
  • A passion for creative writing, drama, or spoken word.
  • Willingness to contribute to whole-school literacy initiatives.
