SEMH Teaching Assistant - Secondary School

We are seeking a dedicated SEMH Teaching Assistant to join a specialist secondary SEMH school in Oldham. The school provides a nurturing and structured environment for pupils with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, focusing on building confidence, resilience, and lifelong learning skills.



Your Role:

  • Support pupils with SEMH needs both inside and outside the classroom

  • Help manage and de-escalate challenging behaviours using a calm, consistent approach

  • Build strong, trusting relationships to encourage engagement and emotional regulation

  • Assist the class teacher in delivering tailored learning activities and interventions

  • Work closely with teaching staff, pastoral teams, and external professionals to support individual progress



The Ideal Candidate Will Have:

  • Experience working with young people with SEMH needs or challenging behaviour

  • A patient, understanding, and empathetic nature

  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills

  • The ability to remain calm under pressure and use positive behaviour strategies

  • (Desirable) A relevant TA qualification or Team Teach / behaviour management training
