Astute's Power Team are working with a leading Waste Management Company to recruit for a Shift Team Leader for their Energy from Waste plant in Peterborough.

The Shift Team Leader will be required to supervise and provide direction to the Shift Operators and day operations staff, ensuring the day-to-day operation of the plant is carried out efficiently and as safe as possible whilst ensuring environmental compliance at all times.

Ideally be qualified with a HNC / HND in Engineering, have several years' experience supervisory experience combined with experience in the Power Sector or similar.

Responsibilities and duties of the Shift Team Leader role
Reporting to the Operations Manager, you will be responsible for:

  • The day-to-day management of a team of Shift Operators / Shift Technicians who will be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of a high-pressure boiler, generator and auxiliary plant.
  • Ensuring the plant is operating within its parameters whilst complying with strict HSE rules and regulations as well as company policies and procedures.
  • Maximising waste input and energy production
  • Chairing daily meetings after a shift handover to review health, safety & environmental issues, overnight activities and plans for the shift ahead.
  • Acting as a HV Senior Authorised Person for the purpose of issuing permits, switching and carrying out mechanical and electrical isolations.
  • Working with the maintenance department when required in order to ensure maximum plant availability.


Professional qualifications
We are looking for someone with the following:

  • Ideally qualified with a minimum ONC / HNC / HND in Engineering or equivalent
  • IOSH or NEBOSH would be advantageous
  • Time served Apprentice in Engineering would be advantageous


Personal skills
The Shift Team Leader role would suit someone who has:

  • At least five years' experience working in an supervisory capacity on a similar heavy industry plant - ideally utilising high pressure steam systems such as Power Plants, Refineries, COMAH sites etc.
  • Flexibility to work days & nights on shift
