Teacher of English Required - Outstanding Portsmouth School (September 2025 Start)
Our Outstanding school in the vibrant city of Portsmouth seeks a dedicated and experienced Teacher of English to join our thriving English department and make a real difference to the literacy skills and literary appreciation of our students across all Key Stages, commencing in September 2025.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Planning, preparing, and delivering engaging and effective English lessons that cater to the diverse learning needs of our students across Key Stages 3, 4, and potentially 5, reflecting the cultural richness of Portsmouth.
- Developing students' skills in reading, writing, speaking, and listening, fostering a love of language and literature.
- Assessing and tracking student progress in English, providing constructive feedback, and implementing effective intervention strategies where necessary.
- Contributing to the development, implementation, and review of the English curriculum, ensuring alignment with the National Curriculum and relevant examination specifications.
- Utilizing and contributing to the development of high-quality English resources, including digital tools and a well-stocked library.
- Contributing to extracurricular activities that promote literacy and a love of English within the school community (e.g., book clubs, writing competitions, drama productions).
- Collaborating effectively with colleagues within the English department and across the wider school to foster a rich and interdisciplinary learning environment.
- Engaging in ongoing professional development to enhance teaching practice and keep abreast of current developments in English pedagogy and literary scholarship.
The Ideal Candidate Will Possess:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.
- A degree in English Language, Literature, or a closely related field.
- Successful experience teaching English across Key Stages 3 and 4, with experience in Key Stage 5 being advantageous.
- A strong understanding of the National Curriculum for English and relevant examination specifications.
- Excellent pedagogical skills and the ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners in a diverse urban environment like Portsmouth.
- A passion for English and the ability to inspire students and foster their critical thinking, analytical, and communication skills.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- A commitment to the safeguarding and well-being of students and the promotion of literacy and a love of language within the Portsmouth community.
