Our engaging and forward-thinking school in the historic coastal city of Portsmouth is seeking a dedicated and experienced Teacher of Geography to join our thriving Humanities department and make a real difference to the geographical understanding and engagement of our students across all Key Stages, with a focus on utilizing our unique coastal location.
Key Responsibilities Include:
- Expert Teaching: Planning, preparing, and delivering engaging and effective Geography lessons that cater to the diverse learning needs of our students across Key Stages 3, 4, and potentially 5, with opportunities to incorporate local coastal case studies and fieldwork.
- Student Progress: Monitoring, assessing, and tracking student progress in Geography, providing constructive feedback, and implementing effective intervention strategies where necessary.
- Curriculum Contribution: Contributing to the development, implementation, and review of the Geography curriculum, ensuring alignment with the National Curriculum and relevant examination specifications, and incorporating fieldwork (especially coastal) and technology.
- Assessment and Examinations: Preparing students for Key Stage 3 assessments, GCSE Geography examinations, and potentially A-Level Geography examinations, ensuring accurate and timely assessment practices.
- Resource Management: Utilizing and contributing to the development of high-quality geographical resources, including digital tools and fieldwork equipment, with a focus on resources relevant to coastal geography.
- Extracurricular Involvement: Contributing to extracurricular activities that promote Geography within the school community (e.g., geography clubs, environmental initiatives, fieldwork trips within and beyond Portsmouth, with a focus on coastal environments).
- Collaboration: Working collaboratively with colleagues within the Humanities department and across the wider school to foster a rich and interdisciplinary learning environment, including potential links with local marine and environmental organizations.
- Professional Development: Engaging in ongoing professional development to enhance teaching practice and keep abreast of current developments in geographical scholarship and pedagogy, with opportunities to develop expertise in coastal geography education.
The Ideal Candidate Will Possess:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.
- A degree in Geography or a closely related field.
- Successful experience teaching Geography across Key Stages 3 and 4, with experience in Key Stage 5 being advantageous.
- A strong understanding of the National Curriculum for Geography and relevant examination specifications, including fieldwork requirements, with an interest in coastal environments.
- Excellent pedagogical skills and the ability to differentiate instruction to meet the needs of all learners, incorporating fieldwork (especially coastal) and technology effectively.
- A passion for geography and the ability to inspire students and foster their critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills in a geographical context, with an enthusiasm for coastal studies.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
- A commitment to the safeguarding and well-being of students and the promotion of geographical literacy and environmental awareness within the Portsmouth context, particularly concerning coastal issues.
