Our client, a leading company in the Defence & Security sector, is currently seeking a Welder to join their team at Portsmouth Naval Base on a contract basis.



Key Responsibilities:

  • Utilising MMA and MIG/MAG/FCAW welding processes in ferrous and non-ferrous materials
  • Understanding operational controls of welding equipment and associated quality assurance requirements
  • Performing tasks requiring radiographic/ultrasonic examination and passing relevant welder approval tests
  • Interpreting engineering drawings and welding procedure specifications
  • Adhering to health and safety regulations, including those related to hot work and confined spaces
  • Using hand held grinders and changing abrasive wheels as required
  • Preventing welding distortion through balanced sequences and restraining bars
  • Travelling and working outside of the main location as needed


Job Requirements:

  • Experience in MMA and MIG/MAG/FCAW welding processes
  • Basic understanding of welding equipment controls
  • Knowledge of welding quality assurance, including weld maps and control of consumables
  • Proficiency in radiographic/ultrasonic examination and related approval tests
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings and welding symbols
  • Awareness of health and safety risks in welding and ship repair environments
  • Familiarity with hot work and confined space procedures
  • Knowledge of methods to prevent welding distortion and visual acceptance requirements for welds


Work Environment:

  • Based in Portsmouth Naval Base working primarily on-board ships in dry docks or workshops
  • Involved in the repair and refit of Royal Naval and Commercial vessels
  • Collaborative team environment to deliver high-quality services
