Senior Human Factors Engineer£55,000 - £70,000 + Benefits

In this role, the candidate will analyse and understand use-cases and concepts of operations performed by pilots, helping guide cockpit designs to ensure optimal application of Human Factors principles. The role supports requirement derivation, conceptual solution development, and cross-functional collaboration within the wider Avionics System team. The candidate will work closely with Test Pilots, the Flight Test community, and customer representatives to ensure Human Factors principles are applied to Human-Machine Interface (HMI) designs-delivering cutting-edge technology for modern military aircraft. The candidate will also contribute to the development of simulators used to demonstrate and test designs during customer assessments, including a full-scale replica cockpit in an immersive environment. There will also be opportunities to test aircraft equipment in flight prior to customer delivery. These tools provide unique insight into fast jet operations and help refine cockpit design through first-hand experience. This role is ideal for someone passionate about design, user experience optimisation, and/or fast jets or military aviation. As a Senior Human Factors Engineer, the candidate will assist in developing HMI designs and schemes for advanced military aircraft cockpits. This includes the evolution of operational modes and capabilities, such as sensor integration, navigation and communication systems, weapons targeting and release, and defensive systems management.

Work ExperienceThe role may also include broader support within the Cockpit Group team, including:

  • Supporting safety analysis using Human Error Analysis techniques
  • Participating in technical document reviews and distribution
  • Conducting validation and verification activities to support qualification and airworthiness clearances
  • Analysing customer requirements to define new or updated cockpit features
  • Developing HMI designs aligned with system requirements, focusing on controls and symbology
  • Defining pilot-system interfaces in collaboration with aircrew, test pilots, and engineering teams
  • Supporting rig test teams by specifying and developing test scenarios to validate HMI concepts
  • Conducting usability assessments with aircrew
  • Producing technical documentation for cockpit systems
  • Leading aircrew assessments of proposed designs and refining those concepts into detailed schemes
  • Coordinating with safety and clearance stakeholders to support design approval
  • Supporting engineering efforts in developing technical publications for aircrew and groundcrew use

Candidate RequirementsCandidates must possess excellent communication skills (both verbal and written) and be capable of engaging a wide range of stakeholders. A proactive mindset, creativity, and a willingness to challenge the status quo are essential. Strong analytical thinking, independence, and problem-solving ability are key attributes.

Essential Skills/Qualifications

  • Degree or equivalent in Human Factors or a related field (e.g., psychology or user-centred design)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Confidence presenting to diverse stakeholders
  • Ability to derive system requirements from high-level inputs
  • Capable of managing multiple concurrent tasks and providing regular updates

Desirable Skills/Qualifications

  • Experience conducting experiments and user assessments
  • Knowledge or experience in the military aviation domain
