Role Purpose


As Systems Group Leader, you will oversee the full lifecycle of systems engineering activities-from requirements definition to integration, verification, and support. You will ensure the application of best practices while supporting the personal and professional development of your team. The role includes both tactical project delivery and long-term strategic planning to support evolving business needs.



Key Responsibilities:


  • Lead, mentor, and support a team of systems engineers, promoting collaboration, innovation, and professional growth.

  • Provide technical leadership across system design, development, and testing activities, following structured lifecycle models such as the "V-Model."

  • Define and allocate work packages, manage team resources, and ensure timely project delivery within budget constraints.

  • Take a proactive, hands-on role in planning and executing integration, validation, verification, and compliance activities.

  • Translate critical requirements into actionable tasks, ensuring traceability and alignment with project goals.

  • Collaborate cross-functionally with mechanical, electrical, software, and other engineering disciplines to ensure fully integrated systems.

  • Continuously improve systems engineering processes and internal documentation.

  • Support business development by contributing technical input to bids, proposals, and customer discussions related to systems engineering.

  • Monitor team performance, provide regular feedback, and support personal development through mentoring, 1:1s, and career planning.

  • Contribute to the development of departmental goals, resource planning, and long-term strategy.

  • Lead recruitment and onboarding efforts for new systems engineers.

  • Stay current with emerging technologies and trends to keep the team at the forefront of innovation.

  • Ensure all systems development activities meet relevant safety, regulatory, and industry standards.


Skills & Experience


Essential:


  • Degree (2:1 or above) in Systems Engineering or a closely related discipline.

  • 7+ years of hands-on experience in systems engineering, particularly involving electromechanical systems.

  • 5+ years of line management and engineering leadership experience, ideally in a project-driven environment.

  • Proven track record in leading multi-disciplinary teams across the full engineering lifecycle-from requirements capture to post-delivery support.

  • Experience in compliance and safety management within regulated industries.

  • Strong communication skills and ability to engage with stakeholders at all organizational levels.

  • Analytical mindset with demonstrated problem-solving capabilities.

  • Proficiency in risk identification and mitigation.

  • Ongoing commitment to learning and professional development.


Desirable:


  • Master's degree in Systems Engineering or related field.

  • 10+ years of technical leadership experience.

  • Experience applying the V-model in defence-related (naval or land-based) system environments.

  • Recognised signatory authority for safety or compliance cases.

  • Familiarity with remote sensing technologies (e.g. radar, electro-optics).

  • Experience conducting environmental and EMC compliance testing.

  • Understanding of electro-mechanical control systems.

  • Experience supporting technical recruitment and conducting interviews.

  • Involvement in technical sales and bid support.

  • Familiarity with project planning tools and requirements management systems.
