Senior Science Technician

We are seeking a Senior Science Technician to ensure the effective facilitation of course delivery across the Science Department. This role requires a proactive individual who can coordinate the use of practical resources and facilities, manage equipment and material availability, and support the science curriculum's practical needs.

Day-to-Day Responsibilities:
  • Coordinate the use of practical resources and facilities under the guidance of the Subject Leader for Science.
  • Manage the availability of materials and equipment, handling conflicting demands and advising teaching staff of necessary changes.
  • Compile, source, and cost equipment and resource requests from teaching staff, suggesting economic alternatives to maintain stock levels.
  • Continually update knowledge of the curriculum to meet changing requirements.
  • Set up and remove apparatus in laboratories, developing practicals to meet curriculum demands and pupil needs.
  • Offer technical advice and plan advanced GCSE science experiments to ensure reliability in classroom settings.
  • Assess requests for practical equipment and resources, suggesting improvements or alternatives to teaching staff.
  • Provide effective advice on practical demonstrations to student teachers and NQTs.
  • Manage stock control, order supplies, and maintain inventory and chemical records.
  • Contribute to the assessment and revision of Health & Safety procedures, safely dispose of materials, and advise on Health & Safety issues.
  • Clean and maintain equipment, ensuring all laboratory facilities are safe and operational.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
  • Relevant Science qualification.
  • Experience in a technician role, preferably within an educational setting.
  • Proficient in setting up and managing laboratory resources and equipment.
  • Knowledge of preparation, use, and maintenance procedures for materials and equipment.
  • Awareness of health and safety issues, ideally with knowledge of CLEAPSS and/or COSHH regulations.
  • Ability to work independently, organise and prioritise tasks effectively.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work flexibly as part of a team.
  • Willingness to undertake training and stay updated on issues relevant to the role.
