Higher Level Teaching Assistant (ELSA and Alternative Curriculum)

Purpose

The role involves assisting in planning and delivering an alternative curriculum (ELSA, Nurture, AQA Unit awards) for students whose pathway differs from the mainstream curriculum. The Higher Level Teaching Assistant will work as part of the Inclusion team to support students with Education, Health and Care plans, additional social, emotional, and mental health needs, or those requiring support to access the curriculum. Responsibilities also include supporting in mainstream lessons, leading group and one-to-one interventions, all in line with school policies and government initiatives aimed at achieving high standards of student achievement and promoting their wellbeing.

Relationships

The postholder will develop positive relationships with a range of stakeholders including school leaders, colleagues across other Trust schools, school staff, students, parents/carers, and external agencies as required.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Support students with social, emotional, and mental health needs, employing de-escalation tactics where necessary.
  2. Plan and prepare group and one-to-one ELSA sessions.
  3. Deliver Nurture group sessions.
  4. Support students in gaining AQA unit awards.
  5. Contribute to the development of an alternative curriculum alongside the wider Inclusion team and Senior Leaders.
  6. Plan and prepare one-to-one or small group academic interventions tailored to students’ needs.
  7. Monitor, assess, record, and report on students’ attainment and progress, providing objective and formative feedback under the direction of a named member of the teaching staff.
  8. Evaluate and monitor the progress of students and maintain up-to-date student records.
  9. Contribute to the identification and execution of appropriate out-of-school learning or other intervention activities which consolidate and extend work carried out in class.
  10. Support the school’s delivery of literacy and basic skills.
  11. Use ICT effectively to support learning activities and develop students’ competence and independence in its use.
  12. Work within the school discipline policy to anticipate and manage behaviour constructively and promote independence.
  13. Develop, implement, and review provision plans and contribute to Annual Reviews as appropriate.
  14. Support parents and contribute to/lead meetings with parents to provide constructive feedback on student progress/achievement.
  15. Establish constructive relationships and communicate with other agencies and professionals, in liaison with the teacher, to support the achievement and progress of students.
  16. Assist with the development of policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, equal opportunities, and data protection.
  17. Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school.
  18. Carry out other associated duties as reasonably assigned by the Headteacher.
