Mental Health Assistant

We are looking for a compassionate, resilient, and dedicated Mental Health Assistant to join our specialist team supporting children with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs in a nurturing and structured school environment. This specialist school is based in Reading.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide daily emotional and mental health support to pupils aged 3-11 with complex SEMH needs.
  • Build trusting relationships with children to help them feel safe, valued, and understood.
  • Support individual pupils in regulating emotions and managing behaviours in and out of the classroom.
  • Assist teaching and therapy staff in delivering tailored strategies and interventions.
  • Act as a positive role model, promoting wellbeing, resilience, and appropriate social interaction.
  • Monitor pupil wellbeing and report changes or concerns to the appropriate safeguarding or pastoral leads.
  • Help create and maintain a calm, predictable, and therapeutic learning environment.
What We're Looking For:
  • A caring, patient, and empathetic individual with a genuine passion for supporting children's mental health.
  • Experience working with children with SEMH needs, autism, trauma, or behavioural challenges (preferred).
  • Understanding of child development, emotional regulation, and attachment-informed practice.
