Software Development Manager | C# / Python / Linux | Hybrid
A niche, specialist company based in the south are currently undergoing multiple major projects within a variety of sectors including large civil organisations and large military organisations and are therefore looking to expand the team with a brand-new hire. Reporting into the Development Director, this position will be the second-most senior position within the engineering department.
This is predominantly remote, though you will need to pop into their office a few days a month (circa a week). So, if you live relatively close to the South-East of England, that will make your life easier.
You’ll have the Lead Developers for each of the teams reporting into you, so will be overseeing a department of 15-18 developers.
Your background prior to management *must* be that of a software developer, as demonstratable experience is key to the position. Though this isn’t a "hands on" role in that you aren’t sitting there coding, it is a highly technical team and you’ll need to "get it", understand problems quickly and help the team to find a solutions (chewing over problems with the teams - not writing a lot of code necessarily, but sometimes prototyping things up etc) - you’ll need to be able to do this with your eyes closed.
On a general day to day basis, you’ll work with the Leads and direct them to help get the most out of the teams (ie immediate daily feedback on the software process - are the DevOps boards up to scratch, are the requirements up to scratch, coach them through if needed).
This is not a replacement - this is a brand-new hire into the organisation.
As this company is within the "Defence" sector, eligibility for SC clearance is essential.
Day to day Responsibilities
- Tech Stack = C#, Python, Front End JavaScript (React, Vue, Angular etc)
- Linux (must be comfortable, competent and confident with Linux & development on Linux - you’ll need to be Linux fluent and have used it day to day)
- Running a department of 3 teams, circa 15-18 in total
- Combination of high-level work and diving hands on with the team to help coach, mentor and facilitate
- Due to the nature of the work, you’ll need demonstratable experience of being a developer who has "worked their way through the ranks" and is 100% comfortable jumping in when needed
Any of the following is advantageous:
- Physics background prior to development (ie Physics MSc, PhD etc)
- Geospatial experience
