An outstanding independent school in Sussex is seeking a visionary and inspiring Director of Music to lead its vibrant music department from September. The school is a wonderful and illustrious co-educational Independent School, hosting Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep phases (2-13). This is a unique opportunity for a talented musician and educator to shape the musical life of a prestigious school committed to excellence and inclusivity.

 

About the Role

As Director of Music, you will be a dynamic leader with exceptional musicianship and strong management skills. You will motivate pupils and staff to achieve the highest standards while fostering a lifelong love of music and ensuring every child experiences the joy of musical expression and performance. The successful Director of Music will embody the spirit of our exceptional school and in doing so will report directly to the Head and Deputy Head Academic (DHA).

 

Key Responsibilities

Leadership & Management

  • Lead and inspire a team of music staff, including the Assistant Director of Music, Music Administrator, and Visiting Music Teachers
  • Manage recruitment, induction, timetabling, and appraisals of Visiting Music Teachers
  • Develop and implement a strategic vision for the Music Department aligned with the school’s co-curricular aims
  • Maintain accurate records of pupil progress and ensure effective communication with parents
  • Promote music as a central element of the school’s marketing and public profile

Teaching & Curriculum

  • Design and deliver an engaging, progressive music curriculum for all year groups
  • Lead by example with outstanding classroom teaching, including preparation for Year 8 Music Scholarship candidates
  • Encourage broad participation and a love of music across the school community

Concerts, Productions & Events

  • Direct key ensembles such as choirs, orchestras, and chamber groups
  • Organise a diverse programme of concerts, recitals, and performances throughout the year, including flagship events like carol services and house music competitions
  • Support pupils in external performances, competitions, and scholarship applications  

 

Director of Music

The ideal candidate will have a love for Music, relevant experience within school settings and the criteria outlined below:

  • A degree in Music with exceptional musicianship
  • Proven leadership and teaching experience in an educational setting
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills
  • A clear vision for promoting musical excellence and inclusivity
  • The ability to inspire and motivate both pupils and staff
