Animal Care Tutor – SEND Provision
Location: Eckington base, with travel across Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, and South Yorkshire
Hours: Full-time, 37.5 hours per week (Monday to Friday), 52 weeks per year
Salary: £34,216 – £42,198 (dependent on experience)
Contract: Permanent or Secondment
We are recruiting on behalf of a specialist education provider for an experienced Animal Care Tutor to deliver engaging, hands-on sessions for learners with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND). This is a unique opportunity to join a dynamic team focused on vocational learning and the development of independence through land-based education.
About the Role
The successful candidate will play a key role in delivering high-quality Animal Care sessions as part of a broader vocational and personal development curriculum. This includes maintaining high standards of animal welfare, supporting learners to achieve their goals, and helping to manage the daily operation of a working farm within the college.
You’ll be based primarily near Eckington, but will be required to travel to additional sites and work in community-based settings. Use of a personal vehicle is essential, with travel costs reimbursed.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and deliver engaging Animal Care lessons and farm-based learning
- Support the delivery of a “Farm to Fork” curriculum, including showing animals at local events
- Ensure high standards of animal welfare and health & safety are upheld
- Maintain DEFRA and regulatory documentation and compliance
- Develop and support farm-based activities including breeding, care routines, and site upkeep
- Collaborate with the Farm Manager and wider curriculum team to create a stimulating learning environment
- Track learner progress, maintain accurate records, and report on outcomes
- Act as a pastoral tutor, supporting learner wellbeing and development
- Manage learner data and liaise professionally with families and carers
- Lead and direct support staff in learning environments
- Participate in quality assurance, staff training, and curriculum development
Person Specification
Essential:
- Relevant vocational qualification in Animal Care or a related field
- At least 2 years’ experience teaching or delivering training
- Experience working with learners with SEND or additional needs
- Strong organisational and communication skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a wider team
- Full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle
Desirable:
- A recognised teaching qualification (e.g. QTS, PGCE, Cert Ed, or FE equivalent)
- Assessor qualification (e.g. TAQA)
- Experience competing in agricultural or equestrian events
- Experience of managing small projects or teams
- First Aid certification
- Maths and English at Level 2 (or willingness to work towards)
