Job Title: Transport Planner (General Haulage – PM Shift)
Location: Rugby
Salary: £32,500 - £35,000 per annum
Hours: PM shift (start between 12:00pm and 1:00pm, finish between 9:00pm and 10:00pm)
Employment Type: Full-Time, Permanent

Overview

We are seeking an experienced Transport Planner to join our general haulage operation based in Rugby on our PM shift. You will be responsible for planning afternoon and next-day work, coordinating drivers and vehicles, and ensuring loads are executed efficiently, safely, and in line with customer service expectations. This role suits someone who is confident in managing a busy transport desk, enjoys problem-solving, and has strong knowledge of UK haulage operations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan and schedule haulage work for afternoon, evening, and next-day delivery runs across the UK.

  • Allocate drivers, vehicles, and trailers effectively, ensuring maximum fleet utilisation.

  • Monitor ongoing jobs, resolving route delays, breakdowns, and customer changes as required.

  • Provide clear and supportive communication to drivers throughout the shift.

  • Ensure planning decisions comply with driver hours legislation, Working Time Directive, and safety standards.

  • Work closely with warehouse, customer service, and other planners to maintain smooth operational flow.

  • Maintain accurate system records including job progress, trailer movements, fuel usage, and driver hours.

  • Support end-of-shift handover to ensure continuity into the next operational period.

Skills and Experience Required
  • Previous experience in general haulage transport planning (essential).

  • Strong understanding of UK geography, driver hours regulations, trailer types, and haulage compliance.

  • Ability to react quickly to changing operational demands, making confident and informed decisions.

  • Excellent communication skills and a calm, professional manner when dealing with drivers and customers.

  • Good IT skills, including Transport Management Systems and Excel.

  • Highly organised with a keen eye for detail and the ability to manage multiple priorities.
