Are you highly organised, curious about the justice system, and looking to make a meaningful impact through your work? We have an opportunity for a Legal Assistant to Join a dedicated Prison Law team and gain hands-on experience supporting vulnerable clients at key stages of their sentence.
This is a rewarding opportunity to assist with the progression of prison law cases, from initial instructions through to representation at parole hearings. Whether you have previous legal experience or are looking to develop your skills in a new area of law, we’ll provide the training and support you need to grow in the role.
This position offers progression for the right candidate, with the chance to take on greater responsibility over time, including visiting clients in custody and preparing case materials for hearings. Further opportunity to develop into an advocacy role, conducting Parole Board hearings and representing clients at prison adjudications.
Key Responsibilities:
- Provide administrative and casework support to the prison law team
- Manage incoming correspondence, maintain accurate case records, and assist with case file preparation
- Communicate effectively with clients in custody, prison authorities, and other legal professionals
- Attend client visits in prison to obtain instructions (following training)
- Assist in the preparation of written representations and documentation
- Support the day-to-day running of a varied prison law caseload under supervision

- Strong administrative skills and attention to detail
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Organised and able to prioritise competing tasks
- Able to work independently and as part of a team
- Competent with Microsoft Office and general IT systems
- Full UK driving licence (client travel required)
Desirable:
- Previous experience in a legal or criminal justice setting
- Knowledge of prison law or parole processes
- Experience handling sensitive or confidential information
