Overview:

Involved Solutions is currently recruiting for a specialist Ecologist to support a central Government agency. The Ecologist role focuses on ensuring legal, environmental and conservation obligations are met, particularly concerning the protection of a nationally significant Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI).

The role of Ecologist offers a unique opportunity to influence conservation and environmental strategy within a government site, supporting both ecological preservation and operational trial activity.

Ecologist - Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver and manage the Stone Curlew Conservation Project, ensuring compliance with all statutory requirements relating to protected species and habitats.
  • Maintain and report on the favourable status of the SSSI, Special Protection Area (SPA), and Special Area of Conservation (SAC),
  • Provide authoritative ecological advice to support operations and infrastructure development, balancing environmental stewardship with strategic objectives.
  • Act as liaison with Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO), Natural England, and other regulatory bodies.
  • Maintain and manage conservation datasets using tools such as Recorder 2006; produce and periodically review Business and Ecological Plans.
  • Fulfil Site Manager responsibilities for the Environmental Change Network (ECN) project.
  • Support risk assessment and sustainability appraisals through expert input and robust data analysis.
  • Contribute to internal and external communications on ecological and conservation matters in line with protocols.

Ecologist - Essential Skills & Experience:

  • Degree (or equivalent) in Ecology or Environmental Science.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of central government environmental procedures and compliance frameworks.
  • Proven experience managing protected sites (SSSI, SAC, SPA) in line with UK environmental legislation.
  • Comprehensive understanding of the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981, Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017, and the Environment Act 2021.
  • Practical knowledge of rural estate and conservation land management practices.
  • Ability to build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including regulators.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; proactive and collaborative approach to project delivery.

Ecologist - Desirable:

  • City & Guilds or equivalent qualification in Agricultural, Forestry, or Land Management.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
