Lead Engineer - Control & Combustion

Shift: Days 37.5 hours

50,000 - 55,000 + Bonus of up to 10%

Job Summary: Manage Control & Combustion activities and technicians, combining engineering management with hands-on support. Ensure high standards in health and safety, work quality, and plant performance.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate proactive and reactive maintenance activities.
  • Manage compliance activities like Thermal Uniformity Surveys, Calibrations, and System Accuracy Tests.
  • Diagnose and repair complex electrical and control systems (PLCs, Burner Management Systems).
  • Develop and implement PPM schedules for machine reliability.
  • Utilize CMMS for maintenance scheduling.
  • Provide technical support for breakdowns and analyse data.
  • Drive housekeeping and 6S standards.
  • Lead continuous improvement activities (Problem Solving Reports, Root Cause Analysis).
  • Maintain and repair various furnaces and equipment.
  • Manage and develop Control & Combustion technicians.
  • Make engineering decisions to prioritize activities and diagnose issues.
  • Understand natural gas and burner management systems.
  • Attend maintenance meetings and reviews.
  • Order and manage engineering parts.
  • Work with OEM service engineers.
  • Achieve Key Performance Indicators.
  • Facilitate lean working practices.
  • Participate in training and upskilling.
  • Permit engineering activities and manage sub-contractors.
  • Plan and deliver maintenance during outages.
  • Adhere to financial budgets and company policies.
  • Follow safe practices and environmental requirements.

Skills, Experience, and Qualifications:

Desirable:

  • Relevant qualification or apprenticeship.
  • Experience in control/combustion engineering and supervisory roles.
  • Knowledge of furnace mechanics, control logic, PLCs, and PID theory.
  • Understanding of instrumentation and engineering drawings.

Demonstrable:

  • Experience in medium to heavy manufacturing.
  • Strong fault-finding and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read electrical and mechanical drawings.
  • PC literate with good numeracy and literacy.
  • Excellent timekeeping and attendance.
  • Team player with good communication skills.
