We are recruiting for a well-established cutting and metal processing company based in Sheffield, supplying precision-cut steel components to a wide range of industries. Due to continued growth, we are looking for a Technical Sales Engineer to join our client's team, someone with a solid technical background and a genuine passion for engineering and customer service.
The Role of a Technical Sales Engineer
- The successful candidate will be responsible for developing and growing customer accounts, from handling initial enquiries through to order completion and delivery. You’ll combine your technical understanding of cutting, steel materials, and CAD drawings with strong communication and organisational skills to deliver an exceptional customer experience.
- This is a customer-facing, technically-focused sales role requiring the ability to interpret 2D and 3D CAD files, break down complex assemblies, and confidently discuss material specifications and production requirements. You’ll work closely with our CAD, Production, and Accounts teams to ensure each project runs smoothly and to the highest standard.
- A background in engineering, fabrication, or steel stockholding will be highly advantageous, as will experience within the laser cutting or metal manufacturing sector.
Key Responsibilities of a Technical Sales Engineer
- Manage and grow existing customer accounts while proactively developing new business opportunities.
- Interpret and break down 2D and 3D CAD drawings and assemblies to prepare accurate quotations.
- Advise customers on steel grades, thicknesses, and material suitability for laser cutting projects.
- Handle customer enquiries via phone and email, providing technical support and guidance.
- Coordinate closely with internal teams to ensure accurate order progression and on-time delivery.
- Maintain a high standard of service, professionalism, and technical accuracy in all communications.
Personal Specification of a Technical Sales Engineer
- Strong Maths and English skills.
- Computer literate with experience using Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook).
- Proficient in reading and understanding 2D & 3D technical drawings.
- Experience breaking down CAD assemblies for quotation and production.
- Working knowledge of steel specifications and stockholding.
- Excellent interpersonal, organisational, and problem-solving skills.
- Confident working independently while contributing positively to a team.
- Previous experience in technical sales, engineering, fabrication
- Willingness to learn – full product and process training will be provided.
