Design Engineer (R&D)

Location: Newtown, Powys
Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent

Are you a creative and technically skilled Design Engineer with a passion for innovation? Do you thrive on taking products from concept through to manufacturing in a highly regulated environment? This is your opportunity to join a growing R&D team at the forefront of developing next-generation products for global markets.

About the Role

As a Design Engineer within our Research & Development team, you'll play a pivotal role in designing and developing injection-moulded products used in critical applications. From initial concept and prototyping to design validation and handover for manufacturing, you'll be involved in the entire product lifecycle.

This is a hands-on design role-not traditional project management-where your expertise in CAD and injection moulding will shape products that make a real difference.

Key Responsibilities

  • Product Design & Development:

    • Create and refine designs using 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks or similar).
    • Develop prototypes using 3D printing and rapid prototyping techniques.
    • Design for injection moulding, ensuring manufacturability and cost-effectiveness.
  • Validation & Compliance:

    • Support verification and validation activities for new and modified products.
    • Ensure compliance with ISO13485 and other regulatory standards.
  • Collaboration & Continuous Improvement:

    • Work closely with suppliers and manufacturing teams to optimise processes.
    • Contribute to product and process improvement initiatives.
    • Participate in risk assessments (FMEA) and root cause analysis.
  • Global Exposure:

    • Occasional travel to Asia and the US for supplier visits and collaboration (approx. 3-4 weeks per year).

What We're Looking For

  • Degree in Product Design, Mechanical Engineering, Medical Engineering, or related discipline.
  • Experience in R&D, ideally within medical devices, pharmaceuticals, FMCG or injection moulding environments.
  • Strong knowledge of injection moulding processes and design principles.
  • Proficiency in CAD software.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and ability to work independently.

Desirable:

  • Familiarity with ISO13485, Toll Gate design control, and Lean principles.
  • Experience in regulated environments (medical, pharma, or similar).

Why Join Us?

  • Be part of a growing, innovative team with opportunities for career progression.
  • Work on products that impact healthcare globally.
  • Enjoy a collaborative environment with exposure to international projects.
  • Competitive salary and benefits, plus the potential for future leadership roles.
