HAYS are delighted to be working with Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council to recruit for a dedicated and experienced Interim Ecologist, with a focus on Development, to join their Economy and Infrastructure Directorate. This role is essential for the effective coordination and delivery of various ecology projects, ensuring they meet agreed timelines, budget parameters, and quality objectives. This role is paying up to £450 per day and will mostly be remote working. The role may require some site visits so candidates who can drive would be ideal.

The key responsibilities of this role are:

  • Provide specialist, technical, and professional advice on ecological issues.
  • Conduct ecological surveys and write comprehensive reports.
  • Liaise with statutory bodies, NGOs, and other relevant organisations to enhance and protect nature conservation sites and landscapes.
  • Support the Council's statutory duties related to planning and the environment.
  • Promote environmental education and community involvement in biodiversity activities.
  • Manage and enhance the River Cole Valley through the Project Kingfisher Partnership.
  • Coordinate practical conservation volunteer programs.
  • Prepare and present reports, and participate in public consultation exercises.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements and statutory legislation.

In order to be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Degree-level qualification in Ecology, Environmental Sciences or equivalent.
  • Associate membership of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management.
  • Practical experience in ecology, including field survey techniques and habitat management.
  • Good working knowledge of British ecology, nature conservation priorities, and the planning system.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage with stakeholders.
  • Experience in managing local government or public sector projects, including ESF or ERDF funded interventions.
  • Advanced understanding of relevant policy, procedure, and legislation.
