We are recruiting for Drug Expert Witness Officer to support a local police force with drug related criminal investigations. This role is based in the Southampton with hybrid working arrangements in place.

Job Purpose

To provide independent and impartial expert evidence for criminal investigations & court appearances relating to Drug Supply, across all levels of criminality in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Key responsibilities include:

  • As force drug expert provide expert witness statements to support investigations including analysis of licit and illicit drugs, communications and language around drug misuse
  • Dry, weigh and examine Cannabis plants in order to accurately calculate the potential yields and provide expert evidence of these findings at court, and provide reports for investigations
  • Evidentially examine, weigh and value drug exhibits, subsequently providing reports and expert evidence of these findings to assist with civil and criminal investigations
  • Plan, manage and prioritise your workload in order to meet deadlines imposed by courts and investigation timescales
  • Understand the investigative process, CPIA and the gathering of information, intelligence and evidence in relation to both overt and covert investigations
  • Maintain awareness of local licit and illicit drug trends and identify possible sources of diversion of controlled drugs to the illicit market
  • Advise officers, the CPS, Barristers and other members of the legal profession matters relating the misuse of Drugs Legislation, this will include attending conferences and court and providing expert testimony.

Person Specification

Essential:

  • Competent Investigator PIP1 or Competent Investigator Serious and Complex Crime (PIP2)
  • Extensive experience of completing investigations into offences relating to Drug Supply
  • Experience of giving evidence in court in trials relating to Drug Supply
  • Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge of drug related matters
  • Basic keyboard skills and working knowledge of Microsoft Office Word
  • Demonstrate an understanding of money laundering

Desirable:

  • Current knowledge regarding Controlled Drug pricing, trends, commodities
  • Significant experience in the police environment giving evidence as an expert witness regarding Drug Supply
  • Attendance at Drug Expert witness course
  • Training in field tests of Controlled Drugs
  • Experience of delivering training

This is a temporary role, working on a part-time or full-time basis for 5-6 months. The role has a pay rate of £20.09 per hour PAYE.
