Job title: Property & Casualty Underwriter
Salary: £40,000 - £50,000
Location: Southampton
PURPOSE OF ROLE
Lawes Consulting is delighted to be partnering with a leading composite insurer to recruit a Property & Casualty Underwriter, based in their Southampton office. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced underwriter to manage and grow a diverse portfolio of Property and Casualty risks, working closely with both national and independent brokers across the region.
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Underwrite new and renewal business across core Property and Casualty lines
- Evaluate risk and apply sound underwriting judgment to deliver profitable decisions
- Develop and maintain strong trading relationships with national and independent brokers
- Support the achievement of regional growth and retention objectives
- Ensure underwriting activity aligns with internal governance standards and regulatory compliance
- Provide technical input on complex or non-standard risks where needed
- Work collaboratively with internal departments such as claims, risk, and actuarial
DAY-TO-DAY
- Office-based in Southampton, handling a varied portfolio of P&C cases
- Assess submissions, negotiate terms, and make informed underwriting decisions
- Engage with brokers to secure new business and retain existing accounts
- Use underwriting systems and pricing tools to manage casework efficiently
- Identify and develop new business opportunities within appetite
- Contribute to underwriting initiatives and team discussions around strategy and performance
EXPERIENCE
- Minimum 2-3 years' experience in Property and Casualty underwriting
- Proven background in assessing and trading P&C risks
- Experience working with a mix of national and independent brokers
- Solid understanding of the UK P&C insurance market
SKILLS
- Strong technical expertise in Property and Casualty insurance products
- Effective communicator with strong broker relationship skills
- Commercially focused, with the ability to balance risk and opportunity
- Confident in decision-making and prioritising workload
- Detail-oriented, proactive, and able to work independently within a team environment
