EHV / HV Substation Design Engineer– £45,000-£75,000 + Benefits–Stafford area

The Role

We are seeking an EHV / HV Substation Design Engineer to join our growing team at Primary Power Consulting.

You will play a central role in delivering EHV and HV substation design services for utility-scale projects ranging from 11kV to 132kV. You will be involved throughout the project lifecycle—from feasibility studies to technical specifications and detailed design reviews—ensuring quality, compliance and innovation in everything you do.

This role offers the chance to work on technically diverse projects for transmission operators, DNOs, and renewable energy developers across the UK.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strengthen our substation design team and grow our capability for future transmission and distribution systems. 
  • Support the full value chain offering for transmission operators, distribution network operators, wind, solar, energy storage and ancillary services developers.
  • Throughout the design process, you’ll be involved in a range of services, from feasibility design to the preparation of technical specifications, scheme drawings, and design compliance checks for all elements of EHV and HV substation design.
  • Build trusted relationships with clients, contribute to bid preparation and provide mentoring/leadership for colleagues.

The Person

  • Bachelor’s Degree / Masters in Electrical / Electronic Engineering or HNC/ HND qualifications.
  • Proven technical ability in Switchgear, Transformers, Cables, OHL and some knowledge of EHV/HV protection systems up to and including 132kV.
  • Relevant experience in EHV/HV Substation Design activities within the electrical contracting or utility industries.
    • Expert in technical Substation design and deep understanding of the associated disciplines
    • Passion for delivering innovative solutions.
    • IT literate.
    • Must have a full UK driving licence, be eligible to work in the UK and be fluent in English with suitable experience to be considered. 
    • We expect you to be self-motivated, flexible, and proactive in your work. You should also be able to work autonomously or as part of a team.
