Our client is looking to recruit an experienced Business Manager to join their team based at HMP Millsike. HMP Millsike in the East Riding of Yorkshire is a new 1,468-place category C resettlement prison for men. The first UK prison to run solely on electricity. It been designed with a clear vision of rehabilitation and reducing re-offending.
The Business Manager will provide strategic and operational leadership for all administrative and business functions within the Education, Skills & Work (ESW) department. This includes oversight of the Activity Allocation Unit (AAU), exam administration, procurement and resource management, and administrative services. The postholder will ensure that all allocations to purposeful activities are accurate, fair, and timely, while leading a professional admin team to deliver high-quality support services that underpin learning, skills, and employment outcomes.
Business Manager - Key Responsibilities:
- Line manage the admin and AAU teams, ensuring workloads are allocated effectively and performance standards are met.
- Provide coaching, development, and training for staff to build capacity and resilience.
- Lead regular team meetings, one-to-ones, and performance reviews. Activity Allocation Oversight
- Oversee prisoner allocations to education, industries, vocational training, and other purposeful activities.
- Collaborate with prison departments to align allocation processes with operational needs.
- Monitor and report on attendance, participation, and achievement data. Administration & Exams
- Manage exam scheduling, entries, invigilation, and results recording in line with awarding body requirements.
- Ensure accurate and timely enrolments, learner records, and achievement claims.
- Oversee departmental admin functions including correspondence, record-keeping, compliance documents, and filing systems.
- Oversee procurement processes for educational and industry consumables, resources, and equipment.
- Liaise with finance and procurement teams to resolve queries and track orders.
- Produce management reports, dashboards, and trackers on purposeful activity, attendance, and outcomes.
- Ensure compliance with audit, funding, and prison regulations.
- Act as a key link between curriculum managers, vocational instructors, industries, and wider prison departments.
- Support prisoner induction processes, ensuring allocations and starting points are captured.
Person Specification:
- Proven track record in a managerial/administrative role.
- Level 3 qualification in Business Administration (or equivalent experience).
- Level 2 in English, Maths, and ICT.
- Strong organisational, leadership, and communication skills.
- High level of accuracy, confidentiality, and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage competing priorities and deliver results under pressure strong,
- Knowledge of exam administration and vocational qualification systems.
- Experience with data/reporting systems (Curious, Nexus, CMS, DPS etc.).
