We are seeking a dedicated Port Health Officer to undertake a variety of duties within the City of London's Port Health Services. This role requires professional and technical expertise in implementing border controls, enforcing legislation, and leading initiatives within the Port Health discipline. The successful candidate will be based in London Gateway but will need to be flexible to visit other port locations as required.
Day-to-day of the role:- Implement border controls for various products, taking decisions on the outcome of these controls.
- Supervise stakeholders at Border Inspection Posts.
- Enforce legislation to prevent the importation of non-compliant food or feed.
- Develop and contribute to national monitoring and sampling programmes.
- Participate in the management of the Port Health ISO 9001 Quality System.
- Liaise with national and international stakeholders on imported food/feed controls and related matters.
- Utilise information management systems daily and ensure accuracy in data handling.
- Conduct educational tasks and provide training related to port health activities.
- Enforce a wide range of public health, environmental, and food safety legislations.
- Must be an Environmental Health Officer, not just a Port Health Officer.
- Degree or Masters in Environmental Health.
- Registered with the Chartered Institute of Environmental Health (EHORB).
- Experience in port health or similar roles within local authority is welcome but not essential.
- Must have a full clean driving license and a car with business insurance.
- No allergies as the role involves handling high-risk foods such as fish, nuts, and chilies.
- Ability to handle non-halal food and alcohol.
- Flexible working locations with a 60%/40% split between on-site and remote work.

- The role operates on an 8-week shift pattern, including early, late, and day shifts.
- Locations include Tilbury, Purfleet, Thame Port, Sheerness, and London City Airport.
