About the Role

We are seeking an enthusiastic and experienced Chef Manager to lead the catering provision at a friendly and inclusive primary school in Stevenage (SG2). This is a rewarding opportunity to create nutritious, appealing meals for young children, manage a small team, and shape a positive food culture within the school.

The successful candidate will take full responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the kitchen, including menu planning, budgeting, compliance, and staff development. Youll have creative freedom to design menus that are healthy, balanced, and loved by pupils, while maintaining high standards of quality and presentation.

The kitchen operates at the heart of the school day, providing healthy meals that support childrens wellbeing, concentration, and enjoyment of food. Youll work closely with school staff to promote a positive dining experience and encourage good nutrition habits from an early age.

Key Responsibilities
  • Plan, prepare, and cook a variety of healthy, child-friendly meals in accordance with school food standards.

  • Lead, motivate, and develop a small catering team, ensuring smooth, efficient service.

  • Manage kitchen finances including budgeting, ordering, and cost control.

  • Ensure compliance with food hygiene, allergen management, and safety regulations.

  • Maintain accurate documentation and record-keeping for audits and inspections.

  • Liaise with school staff and parents to support dietary needs, themed days, and school events.

  • Champion sustainability by reducing waste and sourcing responsibly where possible.

  • Oversee cleaning, maintenance, and safe use of all catering equipment.

  • Create a positive, professional, and welcoming kitchen culture that reflects the schools values.

What Were Looking For
  • Proven experience as a Chef Manager, Cook Supervisor, or Head Cook ideally in an education or contract catering environment.

  • Recognised catering qualification (NVQ Level 2/3 or equivalent) and Level 3 Food Hygiene Certificate.

  • Excellent understanding of food safety, allergens, and portion control for children.

  • Strong organisational skills with the ability to plan menus and manage budgets.

  • Leadership skills with a hands-on, can-do approach to teamwork.
