Policy Engineer (Electricity Distribution)
Location: Manchester
Salary: Competitive + Excellent Benefits

We are currently recruiting on behalf of a major UK electricity distribution business for a Policy Engineer to join their Engineering Strategy team.

This is a key technical role focused on shaping engineering standards and ensuring high-performance plant assets across all voltage levels up to 132kV.

Role Summary

You’ll support the development and implementation of policies and standards for plant equipment, including substation transformers, switchgear, and associated civil infrastructure.

The role combines technical leadership, supplier engagement, and investigative work to ensure safe, reliable, and cost-effective asset performance.

Key Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage engineering policies and technical specifications

  • Approve and audit equipment and suppliers for compliance and reliability

  • Lead defect and failure investigations, including root cause analysis

  • Contribute to innovation and smart grid integration

  • Support procurement activities and framework agreements

  • Provide technical support to internal teams, contractors, and external providers

  • Manage equipment data and reporting systems for asset performance

 

Requirements
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering or equivalent

  • 5+ years’ experience in power networks, substation equipment, or related fields

  • Knowledge of HV/LV systems, network operations, and engineering policy

  • Chartered or working toward professional registration (IET preferred)

  • Strong analytical, communication, and stakeholder management skills
