Engineering Apprentice - Maintenance Team
Due to our client expanding and having won new customers they would like to recruit an Engineering Apprentice to join their maintenance team
Shift: afternoons/evening
Start and finishing Times: 11:30-22:00 –Mon-Thursday, flexibility on Friday and weekends (weekend/ flexibility required)
Direct Report: Engineering Manager, Engineering supervision, works Manager
Indirect report: Manufacturing Director, supervisors
Job description:
Working closely with our qualified team of mechanical and electrical engineers; observe, learn and understand a range of fundamental engineering skills to assist in the long term development of skills which will enhance person skills and the reliability of manufacturing equipment and optimise performance of all plant and equipment. Across two manufacturing plants, working within a team responsible for maintaining equipment which is utilised in the production of high-quality ductile iron and steel castings for turbo/manifold and general engineering sectors to maintain the company’s high-quality standards.

Subject to aspiration and performance, sponsored progression through college on a part-time basis. Support, guidance and mentoring through support network of trainer organisations.
Experience in foundry processes and equipment is preferred but not crucial. Determined, organised and disciplined. As a priority, working safely with tools and equipment with an ongoing commitment to continuous improvement. Working in a busy production plant. The role requires a high level of flexibility and commitment to work. Excellent communication skills, positive attitude, and ability to work on own initiative is imperative.
Duties and responsibilities:
To ensure everyone is working in a safe environment.
Regular checks and maintenance moulding boxes
Understand written instructions and comply with company processes and procedures.
Work independently and on own initiative.
Complete tasks set by supervision or management in a timely manner.
Assist in engineering projects when possible.
Collating data, conducting research and information to assist problem solving.
Read review and understand technical drawings.
Participate in training and follow instructions relating to installation, maintenance, testing and repairing of manufacturing equipment.
Undertake fault diagnosis and repair in a heavy engineering foundry environment.
Participate in risk assessments within the engineering department.
Participate in pre-use and safety checks.
Maintain tools in clean, safe condition. Stow tools and equipment in an organised method
Maintain general housekeeping, cleanliness of working areas.
Collating data, conducting research and information to assist problem solving, overall strategies.
Participate in a philosophy of continuous improvement.
Essential functions of the position include, but are not limited to:
Excellent communication skills and teamwork
Working safely with equipment and wearing the correct PPE at all times
Bring to the attention of the foundry management any practice that you consider unsafe or illegal anywhere within the company.
At all times, ensure that company’s health and safety policy in understood and upheld.
Follow and adhere to manual handling and lifting guidance.
Safe handling of waste and spillages
Ensure all accidents and near misses are recorded in the accident book or near miss form respectively.
Ensure permit to work for all non-routine activities.
Work with the H&S advisor/management to improve health and safety / environmental compliance.
Participate in Installation, maintenance, testing and repairing of manufacturing equipment.
Identify projects to optimise plant performance, reduce cost or improve reliability and output.
Assist in the development of PPM (planned preventative maintenance) systems and scheduling maintenance systems.
Maintain storage of electrical equipment, wiring, motors, switches and spares.
Develop knowledge to assist diagnosis and remedy of faulty equipment to maintain safe operation and productivity to avoid shutdown or downtime.
Follow and respect company purchasing procedures.
Recommend projects to improve business performance and application of engineering.
Identify root cause of persistent downtime and recommend plans to improve.
Safe operation of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electric equipment
Maintaining equipment in safe working condition
Reporting any concerns with equipment to supervision or management
Reporting concerns directly related to casting quality.
Assisting team members to complete daily tasks.
Checking and maintaining stocks of spares
Identify, recommend and maintain agreed levels critical spares
Liaison with key strategic suppliers and stockists
