Design Manager – Major Infrastructure Project

Morson Talent is proud to be recruiting on behalf of one of our key infrastructure clients for an experienced Design Manager. This exciting opportunity will see you lead and manage design consultant deliverables across a major construction project. As a key member of the Technical Services team, you will play a pivotal role in ensuring design activities are completed efficiently, accurately, and in line with contractual and regulatory standards.

This position offers the chance to work with an established project delivery team and collaborate across multiple disciplines, including engineering, procurement, and stakeholder engagement.

Role Summary:

As Design Manager, you'll be responsible for managing all aspects of the design process — from consultant oversight and document control through to compliance monitoring and technical assurance. You will also be the project's technical lead in the absence of an Engineering Manager, providing expert input to ensure the seamless integration of design solutions with project goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the coordination and delivery of design consultant outputs to meet programme milestones.

  • Act as the technical authority on the project where applicable.

  • Track and report design progress, highlighting risks and issues to the Project Manager.

  • Chair internal and external design meetings to resolve technical queries and manage interfaces.

  • Ensure contract compliance in all design submissions and deliverables.

  • Oversee document control and technical query resolution procedures.

  • Implement and manage change control processes related to design scope.

  • Monitor design performance, quality standards, and interface management.

  • Support assurance and approval processes (including NR, LUL, TAA, etc.).

  • Collaborate with project stakeholders, supply chain, and client engineering functions.

  • Mentor and support junior engineers while contributing to recruitment and development initiatives.

Ideal Candidate Profile:

  • Significant experience managing design within complex infrastructure or civil engineering environments.

  • A minimum of 12 months spent within a consultancy or temporary works design team.

  • Broad knowledge of construction methodologies and outputs, with the ability to coach others.

  • Strong understanding of Principal Designer duties under CDM Regulations, including ERIC principles.

  • Ability to deputise for the Project Manager when required.

  • Familiarity with document control platforms and project management systems.

  • Strong leadership, collaboration, and stakeholder engagement skills
