Long-Term Teachers are proud to be recruiting on behalf of a brand-new specialist educational provision located in the picturesque town of Tavistock, Devon. This innovative setting is designed to support students with emotionally based school avoidance (EBSA) and autism, offering a nurturing and therapeutic environment for those who may have struggled with mainstream education.

The school caters for students from Year 3 to Year 11, with the Tavistock site supporting up to 30 students. All pupils hold Education, Health Care Plans (EHCPs) and are placed through the local authority admissions process. The provision is committed to creating a positive, structured and inclusive space where every child has the opportunity to grow both academically and emotionally.

The Role:

We’re seeking an experienced and passionate Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to join this dedicated team. This is a rewarding opportunity to play a central role in the development and success of students with Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and autism.

As a HLTA, you will support students on a 1:1 and small group basis, deliver targeted interventions and assist in the planning and delivery of engaging, differentiated lessons. You’ll also contribute to pupils’ emotional and social development and help maintain a safe, positive learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver tailored support to students with SEMH and ASD, both 1:1 and in small groups

  • Support and contribute to lesson planning and classroom delivery

  • Monitor and track pupil progress, reporting outcomes to teachers and families

  • Implement strategies that build emotional regulation, social skills and academic progress

  • Foster meaningful relationships to enhance students’ confidence and self-esteem

  • Supervise students during break and lunchtime to ensure their wellbeing and inclusion

  • Collaborate with teachers, SENCOs and external professionals to support student needs

What We’re Looking For:

  • A HLTA qualification or significant experience in a similar SEN-focused role

  • Demonstrable experience working with children or young people with SEMH and ASD

  • A strong understanding of additional needs and inclusive teaching practices

  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills with a collaborative mindset

  • Confidence in support lesson delivery and targeted interventions

  • Ability to work independently while contributing to a strong team ethos

  • A firm commitment to safeguarding and the welfare of children and young people
